Chairman of the Special Committee on Renovation of Public Schools (SCRPS) in Lagos State, Hakeem Smith, has revealed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has built and renovated over 4,000 classrooms since he assumed office in 2019.
Smith made this known during a media chat, chronicling the achievements of the body under the Governor Sanwo Olu-led administration.
He noted that since reviving the committee in 2019, the state has rehabilitated 386 classroom blocks across Lagos’ six education districts and constructed 1,290 new classroom blocks, with several other projects still in progress.
The SCRPS was re-inaugurated on November 4, 2019, by Governor Sanwo-Olu, to address the decay in infrastructure in Lagos public schools.
Speaking at the press conference attended by the State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Ali-Balogun, his Information and Strategy counterpart, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, among others, Smith said Governor Sanwo-Olu re-inaugurated SCPPS a few months after assumption of office to continue the public school’s infrastructural renewal drive with a clear terms of reference, having seen the state of the schools’ infrastructure in the state.
According to him, the mandate include rehabilitation of dilapidated structures in Lagos public schools, construction of new classroom blocks where there are shortfalls of classrooms in the public schools, construction of recreational facilities in schools with land availability and provision of principals, teachers and students’ furniture, saying that the rehabilitation spread across the six education districts in the state.
“Since inauguration, SCRPS has rehabilitated 386 blocks of classrooms in both primary and secondary schools in Lagos State. This rehabilitation work is spread across the six education districts in the state.
“About 1,290 classroom blocks have been constructed across the six education districts of the state, while a lot of work is currently on-going,” he said.
