From Okey Sampson, Umuahia
Abia State Government has promised to look into the issue of non Indigenes sacked from its workforce about 13 years ago.
The administration of Senator Theodore Orji had in 2011, sacked some categories of workers from the state workforce, nabbed non Indigenes.
Some of the affected workers, yesterday, made a protest match to Government House, Umuahia to express their anger over the state government’s continued non challance over their plight.
Addressing newsmen after meeting with the Chief of Staff (CoS) to the Governor, Caleb Ejeagba, leader of the protesting sacked workers, Fidelia Ijeoma Ihejirika said the CoS promised them that Government was going to look into their plight.
“The CoS told us that the present Government in the state led by Governor Alex Otti was one that has come to correct the wrongs of the past and would therefore look into our case.
“We were happy with the assurance given to us by the CoS and as a Government with listening ears, we are optimistic it will do something soon to alleviate our sufferings.”
Ihejirika disclosed that the affected workers took the state government to court over the issue, but had to suspend the court action immediately Otti was elected governor because of their love for him.
“We took the Abia State Government to court for dismissing us with ignominy. The case had progressed, but we suspended action on the matter when Dr. Alex Otti was declared governor last year because being a man we have supported since 2014, we believe he will look into our matter.”
Some of the protesting sacked workers who spoke to Saturday Sun said it was unfortunate they could be treated the way they did after serving the state for several years.
They expressesed optimism that the Otti administration would do something positive to alleviate their sufferings.
