On Friday, a hostage situation at a penal colony in Russia’s Volgograd region turned deadly, resulting in the deaths of four prison staff and all four inmates who had seized control.

The attackers, who identified themselves as Islamic State militants in online videos, fatally stabbed four staff members and took eight employees and four fellow inmates hostage. Videos posted by the attackers showed the victims in pools of blood, one with a slashed throat. One prisoner declared they were Islamic State “mujahideen.”

Following the incident, Russian President Vladimir Putin convened a Security Council meeting, demanding a report from key security officials. Snipers from the Russian National Guard ultimately neutralized the four hostage-takers. The hostages were released, but the four attackers were killed.

“Snipers of the special forces of the Russian National Guard in the Volgograd region, with four precise shots, neutralised four prisoners who had taken prison employees hostage. The hostages have been released,” state news agency RIA quoted the National Guard as saying.

Given that it happened after a similar hostage situation involving extremists with ties to the Islamic State occurred in June at a Rostov prison, the incident raises questions about security within the Russian prison system.

The event is the latest in a series of attacks linked to Islamic extremism within Russia, including a prison uprising in June, shootings in Dagestan, and a March attack on a Moscow concert hall.
