The Rotary International District 9112, has erected a symbolic Rotary Wheel giant statue at the Tollgate U-turn, along Lagos/Ibadan Express road, Ikeja, as part of activities to commemorate her 120th anniversary.
The pioneer District Governor, Rotary International District 9112, Olufemi Adenekan, who unveiled the status, gave a brief history of the club.
According to him, Paul P. Harris founded Rotary International on February 22, 1905, along with three other friends, all entrepreneurs, who shared fellowship and net working business.
He noted that the organisation that was started by four people has lasted for 120 years with strong presence in 200 countries, while her membership globally is 1.4 million, with over 33, 000 clubs, and over 520 Districts, and her current president is Stephanie A. Urchiok.
Also speaking, the past President, Eko Atlantic and also the Chairman of 120th Anniversary Planning Committee, G.O.C Barda, stated that the celebration commenced with one week programme of activities, followed by a webinar, with people joining from across the world. The discussion, he said centred on the role of Rotary Club in pursuing world peace.
One of the highlights of the weeklong activities was a visit to old peoples’ home and a medical outreach to Ojodu-Ogba Health Centre, where the chairman of the LCDA donated an ambulance to District 9112. Longe Olarewaju, one of the organisers, pointed out that Rotary is a big organisation, which has stood the test of time for 120 years and still counting. He said the installed monument was to signpost the day that Rotary International was founded.
