In its bid to improve maternal and child healthcare, the Rotary Club of Satellites town, Lagos, has empowered some pregnant and nursing mothers with maternity kits and also educated them on some healthy tips and personal hygiene during pregnancy and postnatal care.
Speaking at the event, where the women attended the antenatal service as President of the club, Rotarian Elizabeth Tabara stated the importance of personal hygiene especially for nursing mothers.
Tabara stated that at Agboju Primary Health Center, they are ready to boost access to maternal and child health care services which is one of the focuses of our organization,” she noted.
She advised the mothers to follow the instructions of the medical practitioners at the hospital while emphasizing that a healthy pregnancy leads to a healthy delivery.
Stressing on the importance of maternal care, she stated, “Health is wealth.” She urged the women to take care of their health during pregnancy, especially nursing mothers.
Tabara spoke about the importance of preventing diseases like malaria, cholera and other pandemics by keeping their environment clean and equally as a strategy to maintain good health.
“They need to go for regular check-ups at the health centers. Listen to health tips from nurses or other health professionals. By doing this and taking care of your health with good nutrition and exercise, you are sure to have a healthy pregnancy and lively babies.”
On his part, the Health Supervisor of Oriade LCDA, Mr Oluwaseun Ogundero, said that the Rotary Club of Satellites has been assisting the health center for years. The Club’s project on maternal and childcare is one out of the many deeds done for their host community.
Ogundero admonished pregnant women not to patronize traditional homes for delivery services. “This person does not have the experience of a professional, they administer the treatment without having full knowledge of the exact dosage and engage in trial and error for medication. This is risky and has health implications.”
He said that Lagos State government has provided free antenatal care and child delivery services, including normal and Cesarean sections, to expectant mothers.
“You can enjoy this benefit from any primary and secondary health facilities run by the Lagos State Government at no cost. The scheme is under the Ilera Eko, which provides free medical services to ensure that the health of families is taken care of while easing their financial constraints and increasing access to quality health care delivery in Lagos State.
He appealed to the women to ensure a high level of hygiene. They should understand that a dirty environment and untidiness causes cholera and every other preventable disease.
