Rotary club applauds reforms in railway operations

The District Governor of Rotary International, District 9110, Rotarian, Adedoyin Lanre has lauded modernisation of infrastructural facilities and services offered by present management of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

He stated this during a recent courtesy visit by a delegation of rotarians to managing director of the corporation Dr.Kayode Opeifa  at the corporation’s headquarters in Lagos.

According to Lanre, the club observed that   railway service is now witnessing a renewed hope as it embarks on strong revitalisation in line with the reforms currently being implemented.

He commended the strides made in revamping the railway sector and emphasized Rotary’s interest in vocational training and national development.

The president also proposed establishment of a Rotary hub within NRC premises and made a special appeal for complimentary support for the upcoming Rotary district conference in Abeokuta.

Responding, Opeifa affirmed openness to collaboration and affirmed support for Rotary initiatives.

He highlighted key aspects of NRC’s ongoing transformation which include: enhancing rail transport by reconnecting major routes such as Lagos–Kano and Port Harcourt–Maiduguri as well as expanding freight and cargo services to boost trade and ease logistics.

Opeifa spoke about current collaboration with states, such as Lagos on the Red Line and Plateau on the Jos–Bukuru narrow gauge railway route.

He pointed out that there is availability of the track access for willing states under the “Railing with States” initiative which gives state governments opportunity to utilize the corporation’s fixed infrastructure in return for royalty to the corporation .

He emphasized the corporation’s strategic role in national development, saying “If railway dies, Nigeria’s economy will grind to zero. That’s why we are optimizing what we have and embracing collaborations that drive growth.”

The visit, facilitated by the President of the Rotary Club of Lagos Island, Rotarian Lekan Dupeye, began with a warm reception by the NRC Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, who led the team on a tour of the railway facilities around the headquarters.

Among areas toured by the visitors are; running shed and railway technical institute at Ebute-Metta Junction. Lagos.

The team was briefed on the institute’s vision, training programmes, and modern skill development programmes  in electrical photovoltaic, carpentry, machine operations, welding, automobile mechanics and fashion.

The delegation also enjoyed a ride from Mobolaji Johnson railway terminal, Ebute-Metta Junction to Raji Fashola terminal, Agege.
