Portugal have announced their squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with captain Cristiano Ronaldo set to become the first male player in history to feature in six World Cup tournaments.

The 41-year-old forward was named in Portugal’s final squad, extending his extraordinary international career and adding another milestone to his football legacy.

Ronaldo’s inclusion, though widely anticipated, officially sets a new World Cup record, reinforcing his status as one of the most enduring figures in global football.

Portugal coach Roberto Martínez described the emotional backdrop to the squad announcement, paying tribute to former international Diogo Jota.

He said:

“He is our strength, our joy. Losing Diogo was an unforgettable and very difficult moment, but the very next day it was up to all of us to fight for Diogo’s dream and for the example he always set in our national team.”

Martínez added:

“Diogo Jota’s spirit, strength and example are the plus one and will always be the plus one.”

Portugal’s squad blends experienced stars with emerging talent, with Ronaldo expected to play a central role in the country’s World Cup ambitions.

Other key players named in the squad include Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, João Félix, Rafael Leão and Gonçalo Ramos.

Already holding the men’s records for international appearances and goals, Ronaldo will be targeting another major achievement as Portugal pursue World Cup glory with one of the tournament’s strongest squads.
