From Paul Osuyi, Asaba
Deputy Senate President and All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Delta State Ovie Omo-Agege on Monday in Asaba boasted that his party would win all elective positions in the state come 2023.
Omo-Agege who was supported by the state chairman of the party, Omeni Sobotie and former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, spoke while inaugurating the state APC Campaign Council with Orubebe as Director General.
Since 1999 when democracy returned, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been winning the state and forming a government.
But Omo-Agege who has served under previous PDP administrations said the end has come for the umbrella party which he described as a monster and cabal that only the APC has capacity to defeat.
Taking a swipe at the present administration of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Omo-Agege said the state has been held hostage in the past seven years with under development.
“We must take back our dear state from Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who with his cohorts, have held our state hostage.
“After over seven years of Okowa, one thing we all agree on is that there is a huge gap between the funding Delta State received, generated and borrowed; even recklessly, and what Okowa’s government has done.
“This has left our state seriously undermined in so many ways that are too numerous to count. Okowa misused and wasted our hard-earned resources.
“And when the state ran out of funds, he embarked on a reckless borrowing spree, thereby mortgaging our future and those of our unborn children,” he said.
Omo-Agege alleged that Okowa who is the vice presidential candidate of the PDP is seeking a third term as governor by supporting the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Sheriff Oborevwori, as his successor.
He contended that Okowa’s move was to shield him from accountability, noting that the House of Assembly under Oborevwori, in the last five years, became a rubber stamp approving every loan application for Okowa without scrutiny.
Delta State APC chairman, Omeni Sobotie appealed to aggrieved members who did not make it into the campaign council to be patient, assuring that everybody would be accommodated.
Sobotie said with last Friday’s Supreme Court which confirmed Oborevwori as the PDP candidate, victory was sure for the APC in 2023.
On his part, Director General of the campaign council, Godsday Orubebe, called on APC members to forgive one another and forged a common front to defeat PDP.
Orubebe described Omo-Agege as a very disciplined, courageous and committed man who was desirous of bringing good governance to Delta State.
