Worried by the spate of road crashes, Vice President Kashim Shettima and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume have charged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to review performance and to double its efforts to curb the societal menace.
Shettima and Akume gave the charge yesterday at the FRSC 8th Annual Lecture Series in Abuja, with the theme: “Road Safety Management and Emerging Transportation Trends: Global Partnership and Optimal Performance.”
According to the Vice President, the government will continue to promote compliance with global best practices in road safety by supporting innovations that strengthen the Corps to ensure compliance with road safety laws and regulations.
Also, he commended the FRSC for its laudable achievements, which he said placed Nigeria in focus as a leading country in road safety management in the West Africa sub-region as well as in Africa in general.
“The purpose of the Annual Lecture Series underscores the need for the Corps to review performance, identify needs, as well as create awareness of the challenges of road safety management in Nigeria.
“Consistent with these objectives, I believe that the lecture series will open up new vistas for driver education, policymakers, and the general public to imbibe best practices and innovations in road safety.
“It is on record that previous lecture series yielded highly beneficial insights, leading to improvements in safer driving habits and attitudes through evidence-based guidance and sustained enlightenment campaigns that also translated into improvements in the capacity of road safety transport operators as well as responders to road crashes.
“I wish to commend the FRSC for its numerous laudable achievements, which placed Nigeria in focus as a leading country in road safety management in the West Africa sub-region as well as in Africa in general.

“I wish to assure you that the government is aware of the landmarks and current milestones associated with the commitment of the current FRSC management,” he said.
On his part, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed explained that the FRSC adopted the Annual Lecture Series as a platform to create awareness of the recurrent issues of road crashes as a major public health challenge requiring urgent action.
“The purpose of the Lecture Series is to share experiences and provide fresh perspectives on road safety management in Nigeria.
“The maiden edition of the Annual Lecture Series was organised in the year 2009 with the theme: Sustainable Development and Road Safety.
“The successes of the first Lecture Series motivated the Corps to adopt the lecture series as a yearly platform to canvass support and create massive awareness of the challenges posed by road crashes, especially against the emerging trends in the global road transport system,” he said.
