- Urges him to help find solutions to nation’s worsening economy
From Tony John, Port Harcourt
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Rivers State chapter, has admonished the President of the Senate, Senator Godswil Akpabio, to be mindful of his utterances in order not to over heat the already tensed political atmosphere in Rivers State.
Publicity Secretary of the party, Tambari Sydney Gbara, said this in reaction to a statement credited to Senator Godswill Akpabio at an event in Rivers State, recently, where he (Akpabio) had asked the Minister, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Woke, to look for somebody from the Ogoni extraction to take over from Governor Siminialayi Fubara in 2027.
The PDP Publicity Secretary argued that, in as much as he believes in the Ogoni governorship project, it is not the right time to make such utterances considering the tensed political atmosphere in the State and the fact that election was still very far away.
He went further to explain that the governor, Siminalayi Fubara enjoys immense support from the Ogoni ethnic nationality, who are good neighbours to the people of Opobo and also in the same senatorial district.
The PDP spokesperson disclosed that Governor Fubara has started the development of Bori town, the traditional headquarters of Ogoni people with the ongoing construction of the internal roads in the city including other people-oriented projects.
Gbara said: “The Senate President who is a notable leader in the South-South region is expected to make utterances that will calm the already tensed political situation in the State and not one that will aggravate it.
“Senator Akpabio’s statement knowing fully well, that there is a sitting governor in the State, is demeaning of the office of the governor, which he would not have tolerated in his time as Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
“His Excellency, Siminalayi Fubara Governor of Rivers State, is the leader of the PDP and will chose his successor at the end of his tenure, with the support of Rivers people as the former governor did in his own time.”
Rivers PDP regretted that at a time when people are passing through excruciating pains, sufferings, hardship and hunger due to the bad state of the nation’s economy, the Senate president did not show any concern regarding what the poor masses are going through, but rather, chose to making comments that angered majority of Rivers people who are resolute in their support for the present administration, led by Fubara.
Gbara continued: “It would have been better if the Senate President had said things that would encourage them to continue believing in the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Tinubu, rather than talking about 2027 election, which clearly shows that the Senate President does not care about the welfare of Nigerians.
The PDP Publicity Secretary, Gbara, advised Rivers people to ignore Akpabio’s statement and continue to stand with Governor Fubara and support his dream of taking Rivers State to an enviable height.
He also appealed to the people not to allow themselves to be provoked, but rather pray for President Tinubu for continued wisdom and understanding to pilot Nigeria out of the bad economic situation being experienced presently.
