  • Removes Leader, suspends 6 lawmakers
  • We’ll resist unjustifiable attempts – Fubara

From Tony John, Port Harcourt

The Rivers State House of Assembly has served a notice of impeachment on the governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

The House has also removed the House Leader, Edison Ehie and suspended six other legislators.

About 26 members of the House of Assembly supported the impeachment moves at a brief session presided over by the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, on Monday.

The sitting was held at the outer part of the burnt Assembly chamber. The House adjourned indefinitely.

Meanwhile, the embattled Rivers governor, Fubara, has declared that he would resist any attempt to impeach him unconstitutionally.

The governor, who was fully guarded by youths, and drove on Hilux vehicle, stated this when he addressed his supporters at the Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday.

Fubara’s reaction followed the impeachment process commenced by the State House of Assembly.

The governor reportedly inhaled teargas at the Assembly area as Police fired canisters to disperse rampaging protesting youths.

The protesters retired at the Government House, where Fubara, who dressed in blue T-shirt, jeans trousers and papal’s cap told them that any unjustifiable attempts to remove him from office would be resisted.

He alleged that a senior police officer shot directly at him, adding that he was not afraid of death.

He expressed: “Ice water (calmness). I know how you people are feeling. Just take it easy. When you have the youths, the difference is our own power. We will not abuse it.

“We were at the House of Assembly to see for ourselves what was happening. On my way there, I was shot at directly by the D.C or whatever they call him. But, it doesn’t matter. You can die inside your house; you can die outside. It doesn’t matter.

“So, my journey today, whatever it is that wants to happen, let it happen. If it Siminalayi Fubara, I am not a force; neither will I be. But, what is important is any attempt that is not justified will be resisted.”

Speaking further, he told whoever or those calling for his impeachment to tell Rivers people the offence he had commitment.

“Tell Rivers people that offence that I have committed. That is what I want. Come and tell Rivers people that offence that Fubara committed warranting impeachment.

“My happiness this morning is the people of Rivers State presented by you all that are here, are with us. Let me assure you people that I will continue to defend you and you will enjoy the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time, I will address the press.”
