Review: Glowtarz house of vogue’s ‘Ekpo collection’ walks the line between drama and discipline

At the Uyo Fashion Show in May 2023, Glowtarz House of Vogue introduced the Ekpo Collection, a lineup that leaned on spectacle while still nodding to wearable glamour. Creative director Glory Uduak Peters once again showed her flair for drama, but this time with an attempt to anchor it in structure and precision.

The standout look was a glittering two-piece ensemble: high-waist trousers paired with a sharp, cropped blouse featuring bold shoulders and a trailing cape. The midnight-blue shimmer of the fabric, scattered with light-reflecting details, gave the model a statuesque presence as she walked the runway. Paired with a jewel-box handbag and simple pumps, the outfit walked the line between stage-ready and red-carpet appropriate.

Where the collection succeeded was in its embrace of strength. The angular tailoring of the shoulders and the clean lines of the trousers kept the glamour from tipping into excess. This was not just decoration for decoration’s sake; there was a sense of control that made the sparkle feel deliberate rather than overwhelming.

Yet the risks of overstatement lingered. The extended cape, while visually arresting, sometimes distracted from the clean silhouette beneath it. The heavy reliance on sequined fabric also raised questions about versatility. Away from the spotlight, one wonders how much space pieces like this occupy in real wardrobes.

Still, the Ekpo Collection left its mark. Peters demonstrated her growing ability to balance theatrics with discipline, offering designs that can both command attention and hold their shape under scrutiny.

In the end, Glowtarz House of Vogue’s Ekpo Collection was less about subtlety and more about presence. It asked its audience to consider not just how clothes can be worn, but how they can project authority and elegance at once—a reminder that African couture can dazzle without losing its backbone.
