Digital Realty, operator of Medallion Data Centre, has won three awards at the 20th Anniversary Excellence and Legacy Awards of the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), in recognition of its contributions to the development of Nigeria’s internet infrastructure.

The company was the only organisation to receive three awards at the ceremony held last Friday, highlighting its longstanding partnership with IXPN and its role in strengthening local internet interconnection.

The awards presented to Digital Realty included the Strategic Data Centre Partnership Award and the IXPN Founding Members Legacy Award, while its Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Ikechukwu Nnamani, received the Distinguished Contribution to Internet Exchange Development Award.

The recognitions acknowledged the company’s investments in data centre infrastructure, its pioneering role as a founding member of IXPN and its sustained support for local internet traffic exchange.

Digital Realty’s data centre campus in Lagos, comprising LOS1 and LOS2, serves as a major hub for internet exchange in Nigeria, hosting a significant proportion of the country’s local internet interconnection traffic.

Speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer of IXPN, Muhammed Rudman, highlighted the expansion of interconnection capacity among major data centre facilities in Nigeria.

He disclosed that connectivity between Equinix and Medallion had reached one terabit per second (Tbps), while the interconnection capacity between Rack Centre and Medallion had expanded to 500 gigabits per second (Gbps).

The development reflects the growing capacity of Nigeria’s internet infrastructure to accommodate rising data traffic, improve network resilience and support the delivery of digital services.

In his remarks, Nnamani said Digital Realty’s data centres continued to serve as a central location for local internet peering in Nigeria, hosting a significant majority of IXPN traffic.

He explained that the facility functions as a hub connecting other data centres through a star configuration, reinforcing its importance in the country’s internet connectivity ecosystem.

Local internet peering enables internet service providers, telecommunications operators and content providers to exchange traffic within the country, reducing dependence on international transit routes, lowering connectivity costs and improving network performance.

The awards also underscore the longstanding relationship between Digital Realty and IXPN, which has contributed to the development of local internet interconnection since the exchange was established in 2006.

Over the past two decades, IXPN has worked to strengthen Nigeria’s internet ecosystem by enabling networks to exchange traffic locally, helping to reduce latency, improve connectivity and enhance the overall performance of internet services.

As a founding member and infrastructure host, Digital Realty has provided a platform for local peering and interconnection, supporting the growth of Nigeria’s internet infrastructure and wider digital economy.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to providing resilient, carrier-neutral data centre infrastructure to support the next phase of internet growth in Nigeria and across West Africa.

The recognition comes amid rising demand for reliable data centre facilities and high-capacity interconnection, driven by the expansion of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital financial services, content delivery and other data-intensive technologies.
