Residents return to Bauchi community after clearance by military

Residents of the Mansur community in the Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State have returned in large numbers to their homes following the successful clearance of terrorists from the area by troops of the Nigerian Army.

The return, which took place on 22 April 2026, was marked by widespread celebrations as displaced residents trooped back to reclaim their ancestral homes after spending nearly two months in exile.

A statement from the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 33 Artillery Brigade, Lieutenant Oluwakemi Fagbolagun, said the Mansur community had been deserted since 26 February 2026, when armed terrorists attacked the village, forcing residents to flee. During this period, farmlands were abandoned and homes were left unattended.

The breakthrough followed a series of coordinated military offensives, including Operation BUGUN KARKANDA III and the follow-up Operation WUTAN DAJI, both directed by Army Headquarters and executed by the 33 Artillery Brigade.

Military sources said the operations led to the successful clearance of terrorists from several strongholds, including the Yankari Game Reserve, as well as other locations across Bauchi, Plateau, and Taraba states.

According to the military, communities previously under terrorist control, including Mansur, have now been liberated, paving the way for the return of displaced residents.

Following the clearance phase, operations have transitioned into a consolidation stage, which involves handing over secured areas to relevant security agencies and government institutions to maintain law and order, as well as facilitate the safe return of communities.

Scenes of joy greeted the residents’ return, with men, women, and children seen singing and dancing as they re-entered the village. Many immediately began inspecting their homes and clearing overgrown vegetation in their compounds.

Community leaders expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for what they described as a swift and decisive intervention that restored peace to the area.

They noted that the renewed presence of security personnel has brought a sense of reassurance to residents, marking what they described as the beginning of a new chapter for the community.
