The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has said opposition political parties are increasingly worried about the possibility of deregistration, claiming that only the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to feel secure in the current political climate.

Baba-Ahmed made the remark during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while reacting to the recent court ruling affecting the registration status of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, the development has heightened anxiety among opposition parties, many of which now fear they could face similar legal challenges.

“I don’t think any party in the opposition sleeps with both eyes. Every party except APC. Everybody’s scared,” he said.

Describing the situation as unsettling, Baba-Ahmed said the ruling against the NDC had sent a worrying signal to other political parties seeking to challenge the ruling party.

“It’s very unnerving. What just happened in the courts today regarding NDC… Any party that tells you that they feel absolutely comfortable, then they’re not serious about being a political party,” he added.

The PRP chairman, however, expressed confidence that his party would survive any political or legal challenges that may arise.

Reflecting on the party’s history, Baba-Ahmed said the PRP had endured difficult political periods in the past and remained resilient.

He recalled that the party, under the leadership of the late Mallam Aminu Kano, played a significant opposition role and remained relevant despite the political realities of the time.

“We’ve come through everything, and we believe that we will go through this difficult time,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He maintained that while the current political atmosphere has created uncertainty for opposition parties, the PRP remains determined to continue its activities and defend its place in Nigeria’s democratic process.
