The National Coordinator, Reproductive Maternal Child Health, Prof. Emmanuel Adedolapo Lufadeju said providing a quality reproductive health system for women through will reduced maternal death in Nigeria.
He noted that the health aspect of family planning is incontrovertible as it improved the survival of children and women during birth.
Prof. Lufadeju disclosed this yesterday while presenting contraceptive equipments for quality health assurance for women worth N20 million to Plateau State Government.
He noted that the project which was sponsored by Rotary Foundation and Garman Cooperation can prevent cancer of the reproductive system.
“The health aspect of family planning is incontrovertible, it makes women healthy, it improve survival of children and family planning can reduce maternal death up to 30%.
“Some of these contraceptive can prevent cancer of the reproductive system of the women, but most importantly is the welfare and good health of the mothers and their families.
“Nigeria is loosing 512 women as a result of pregnancy and child birth out of evey 1000 birth, that’s alot and all our efforts at community dialogue, training of providers is geared towards assisting women to go about their reproductive right, good health and reducing that number drastically.”
He explained that there are about 23 percent of women at child birth age who do not have access to contraceptives and noted that they are determined to make contraceptives available to such class of Women.
“We have being doing good in the world helping here and there, this is because Government cannot do everything. Our project is sponsored by Rotary Foundation and German Cooperation, that is why are able to cover nationwide.”
The North Central Coordinator, Elvis Chukwu said the project is running in the 36 states of the federation and noted that every state was being carried along.
“We are working to prevent too early pregnancies, pregnancies too close together and many pregnancies, these are all risky pregnancies that lead to death of women, we prevent them through community dialogue.”
Commissioner for Health Plateau State, Dr. Ndam Lar who received the equipments and delivered to the benefitting communities across the state urged the staff to ensure that the equipment are not sold.
He said the State Government will put a monitoring mechanism to ensure that the equipments are used to provide quality life for women and reduce maternal death in the state.
