Protesters under the aegis of Kaduna Citizens Watch for Good Governance at the weekend took to the streets in support of on-going investigations involving former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, declaring that accountability must prevail regardless of status.

The demonstrators marched to the Kaduna offices of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards demanding a thorough probe and possible prosecution of their former governor.

Speaking during the rally, the group’s Chairman, Comrade Victor Duniya, described the actions of the anti-graft agencies as a bold response to public outcry over alleged financial mismanagement during the former governor’s eight-year tenure.

He said the recent questioning and detention of El-Rufai by the EFCC and ICPC represented what he termed a “turning point” in the anti-corruption campaign.

Duniya referenced a June 5, 2024 report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly’s Ad-hoc Committee, which reportedly indicted the former governor over alleged diversion of N432 billion in public funds.

He said citizens had since filed petitions urging federal agencies to act on the findings.

“We are here to encourage the EFCC, ICPC and the Department of State Services to remain resolute.

“The people of Kaduna want a transparent process and justice served without fear or favour,” he said.

The group also called for clarity in on-going security-related investigations linked to the former administration, insisting that public trust in institutions depends on thorough and impartial handling of such cases.

While critics of the probe have raised concerns about the former governor’s health and alleged political motivations, the protesters dismissed such claims as distraction; expressing confidence that due process would be followed.
