Residents of Eleyewo, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State have taken to the streets to protest a bandit attack on the community that resulted in the abduction of a couple.

Armed bandits reportedly stormed the community on Friday night, shooting sporadically.

The bandits abducted Jamiu Olawale and his wife, shot another escaping resident and caused other residents to flee in panic.

In response, angry residents blocked the Akure-Owo expressway on Saturday morning to draw the attention of authorities.

Ondo State Police Command spokesman, DSP Abayomi Jimoh confirmed the attack.

He said the assailants struck around 9:45 pm on Friday.

According to him, the abducted couple resided at Olaribigba Estate, Oluabo.

“The couple had just returned home from their shop in an ash-coloured Toyota Camry when they were attacked at the frontage of their residence by unknown gunmen who reportedly emerged from the surrounding bush.

“The attackers abducted the couple and whisked them away to an unknown destination. During the incident, a neighbour, Mr. Patrick Ilumaro, who was seated in front of his residence, sustained a gunshot wound.

“He was promptly rushed to hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment,” Jimoh said.

Friday’s attack occurred barely two days after the monarch of Agamo Community in the same local government area, Oba Kehinde Falodun, was killed by armed bandits.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, on Thursday led a high-powered delegation of heads of security agencies—including the Commander, 32 Brigade Artillery of Nigeria Army; the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC); and the Director, Department of State Services (DSS)—to the scene of the tragic incident at Agamo Town.
