Professor Ojimmadu Ohajuruka has lauded the Abia State Government for the establishment of the School for the Blind in Umuahia.
Prof Ohajuruka, elder brother of a former Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Stanley Ohajuruka made the commendation when he led members of the Ohajuruka family in Umuahia to donate educational materials and food items to students of the School for the Blind, Umuahia.
The head of the Ohajuruka family said he had been providing support to the school for the past three years, pointing out that he was moved by the conditions and living standard of the blind persons in the society.
Prof Ohajuruka who praised the efforts of the teachers in taking care of the blind students, urged the students to optimally make use of the educational materials he provided, to become champions.
He called on concerned authorities to provide conducive learning and residential environment for the blind students.
Abia State Commissioner for education, Professor Uche-Eme-Uche said the administration of Governor Alex Otti is presently giving special attention to the school of the blind in the area of provision of food items.
Represented by the Head of Department, educational services in the Ministry, Mrs Ada Uka Agwu, the Commissioner thanked the Ohajuruka family for their numerous gifts to the school.
Recieving the items, the Principal of school, Onyeoziri Benedicta said her school was overwhelmed by the special provisions made by the Ohajurukas.
She said the food items given the school would go a long way in feeding the students .
While appreciating the cash donation, the Principal appealed to the State government and other individuals to assist the teaching staff by increasing their allowances as it was becoming hard for them to transport themselves to the school cater for the students.
She called for the rehabilitation of the school to make it conducive for teaching and learning.
Some of the educational materials donated to the school included braille books and special computer sets. The food items included bags of rice, beans, garri, crayfish, among others.
The Ohajuruka family equally donated cash to the blind students and their teachers.
