Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Sunday called for calm following the reported death of a prominent cartel leader, El Mencho, which led to the postponement of many football games throughout the country.
Authorities confirmed that security forces eliminated Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
The development triggered retaliatory violence in several areas, particularly in western Mexico, where armed groups set vehicles ablaze and blocked major roads.

In response to the situation, the organisers suspended several women’s league games and many matches in the seventh round of Liga MX’s Clausura tournament. Additionally, Mexico’s international friendly against Iceland was postponed.
According to league officials, the main reason for the cancellations was safety concerns for players, staff, and fans. Travel and stadium security logistics were made more difficult by reports of road blockades and occasional altercations.
Addressing the nation, Sheinbaum urged citizens to remain calm and assured the public that the federal government was coordinating closely with state authorities to restore order.
“We are working in full coordination with local governments to guarantee security,” the president said, emphasizing that public safety remained the administration’s top priority.
