POWA empowers police wives with entrepreneurial tools

By Henry Uche, Lagos

In her sustained resolve to encourage wives of police officers to develop entrepreneurial skills, the President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Dr Mrs Elizabeth Egbetokun, has empowered wives of police officers attached to the Ports Authority Police (Western) Command. Through the POWA Chairperson of the Command, Mrs Abiola Ishola, the women received different types of equipment and gadgets.

This initiative aligns with the POWA President’s vision to ensure that all police officers’ wives develop entrepreneurial skills that will benefit them and their families.

The special guest of honour at the flag-off ceremony was the wife of the Inspector General of Police, Dr Mrs Elizabeth Egbetokun, POWA President, ably represented by the Zone 2 Police Command POWA chairperson, Mrs Gloria Durosimi. Also in attendance were the Lagos State Police Command POWA chairperson, Mrs Adekemi Fayoade, POWA members, the chief host, Mrs Abiola Ishola, the Commissioner of Police, Ports Authority Police (Western) Command, CP Olanrewaju Olawale Ishola, and his management team.

In her address, the chief host, Mrs Abiola Ishola, noted that the POWA secretariat at the Ports Authority Police (Western) Command was inaugurated in November 2023, following her husband’s assumption of office. She emphasised that it was no longer fashionable for wives of police officers to be full-time housewives without skills to earn a living, hence the need for this empowerment scheme under the directive and approval of the POWA President.

CP Ishola appreciated all wives of police officers for their unwavering support, noting its importance in encouraging officers to legitimately discharge their duties. He also thanked the wife of the Inspector-General of Police for conceiving and executing the empowerment initiative.

The event featured a short talk on the effects of drug abuse, anchored by Chief Superintendent of Narcotics, Bola Ojeleye, from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Equipment such as grinding machines, hairdryers, sewing machines, and deep freezers were distributed to POWA members, a gesture commended by the Lagos State Police Command POWA Chairperson, Mrs Adekemi Fayoade.
