Former Senate President Senator David Mark has expressed deep sadness over the death of Pope Francis, describing him as a man of impeccable character who fostered transformation, unity, and stronger family ties in the Catholic Church.
Senator Mark, who led Nigeria’s delegation to the Pope’s inauguration on 19 March 2013 at St Peter’s Square in the Vatican, issued a statement through his Special Adviser on Media, Paul Mumeh, on Thursday.
He called Pope Francis a rare gift to the world who would be greatly missed.

Mark recalled the first Mass celebrated by Pope Francis before world leaders, which focused on the solemnity of St Joseph, the liturgical day of the Mass.
“The exit of Pope Francis is a huge loss to the world but a gain to heaven,” he said. “He was a leader with distinction and character. He was a rare gem.”
The former Senate President prayed that Pope Francis’s legacy of humility, sacrifice, and service to God and humanity would endure. He urged Catholics worldwide to find comfort in the Pope’s exemplary life.
