A former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (South), Chief Bode George, yesterday told those seeking political solution to the lingering crisis bedeviling the party to bury the thought, as it would amount to a mere waste of time.
He made this submission while addressing the party’s supporters at his Ikoyi office in Lagos. George’s declaration was coming on the heels of the renewed move by the Governor of Bayelsa State and Chairman of the PDP reconciliation committee, Seriake Dickson, to prevail on the key actors to sheathe their swords and embrace the option of dialogue as a way to end the protracted crisis bedeviling the party.
According to George, the only hope left for the PDP to finally lay the crisis to rest is the Supreme Court ruling on the latest judgment of Appeal Court in Port Harcourt. .His words: “Anything you do through a shortcut leads to perfidy. What is at stake here is a matter that goes into the heart of our party. And any decision by the Supreme Court will affect other political parties. We must show to the people that our party is a party that believes in justice, fairness and equity. i am not saying that there shouldn’t be reconciliation. But any shortcut without the due process will lead to perfidy.”
He further warned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to desist from deliberate mussing of the opposition, adding that the consequences would be too grave for the nation’s democracy. “No doubt, the root cause of the festering crisis in our party has an unveiled external linkages. Without competition, without plurality of thought, without tolerance of alternative voices, there is no democracy. A virulent monolithic state is the quickest road to chaos and societal destruction,” he said.
Reacting to the alarm raised by the Afenifere over the parade of 20 suspected masterminds of the Ife crisis, George called on the Inspector-General of Police to do a thorough investigation professionally without bias so that the situation won’t go beyond the level police could handle.
