The Osun State Police Command, yesterday, arraigned three people; Adebayo Akinsilo (40), Oloyede Babatunde (46) and Oloyede Habib (28), for an attempt to oust the Alawo of Awo, Oba Abdulrazaq Taiwo Adegboyega, from his palace.
The defendants were said to have acted upon the recent judgment of the Supreme Court which allegedly ordered the removal of the monarch and attempted to remove the traditional ruler.
They were arraigned on six counts spanning conspiracy to commit felony, unlawful invasion and breach of public peace.
Police prosecutor, Idoko John, told the court that the defendants on August 26, 2022 invaded the palace of Alawo of Awo, with others at large, and armed themselves with dangerous weapons, such as machetes, axes, and charms while chanting war songs.
He stressed that the defendants caused panic and fear among the people of Awo town and, also, threatened to kill the king should he fail to leave the throne. The offences were contrary to and punishable under sections 516, 42, 86, 517, 70 and 249 (d) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State, 2002.
However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the offences against them. The defence counsel, Kehinde Adesiyan, urged the court to admit them to bail in the most liberal terms, promising that they would stand their trial.
Magistrate Adeyomoye Adeyeba granted them bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum.
He subsequently adjourned the case to October 12, 2022, for hearing.
