In a bid to stem the tide of growing killings in Mangu, in the central zone of Plateau State, the Joint Security Task Force, code-named Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), has relocated its tactical headquarters to Mangu Local Government Area from Jos, the state capital.
The move, according to the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Williams Maxwell Dangana, was in direct response to recent security breaches in Mangu, especially the violent assault on Bimper village, which resulted in the loss of 24 lives.
Dangana, who also doubles as the OPEP commander, speaking in Mangu while addressing the troops stationed in the area on Wednesday, said that establishing a physical presence in Mangu would enable the leadership to maintain a direct, real-time assessment of the situation and implement timely tactical responses.
He announced the establishment of ‘Operation Hard Nut’, which would involve a robust reinforcement of troops and equipment.

He said that he had all the complements of military equipment, including the tacit support of the Chief of Army Staff, who had supplied all necessary logistics to execute the operation.
“My being here is not just in person. I am here with a lot of enablers, additional manpower, and all the resources that are required to confront the heightened security threats, in Mangu and the surrounding areas,” the GOC said.
He described the newly launched ‘Operation Hard Nut’ as a strategic initiative tasked with dismantling armed networks and restoring order across volatile communities in Mangu and surrounding parts of Plateau.
The commander said that troops would remain in the area until hostilities ceased and all Mangu citizens were safe to move freely and conduct their business and farming activities.
