Barkin-Ladi Local  Government, Plateau State, on Monday, came under attack as gunmen on rampage ransacked Ghashish community, killing six persons and leaving many wounded.

A source in the community said the gunmen stormed the area at about 11:34 pm and fired a salvo of gunshots into the air to awaken the villagers, who were already fast asleep, thus causing pandemonium in the  communities.

The source said,” As the victims were  coming out of their houses, they were hacked to death. A total of  six persons were killed, leaving many others with gunshot wounds, while houses and properties were equally set ablaze.”

Chairman of Barkin Ladi Local Government Council,  Stephen Pwajok Gyang, in a statement signed by his press secretary,  Mercy Yop Chuwang, confirmed the incident and called on the people of the area to remain calm as security men were  on top of the situation.

During a visit to those injured in the attack at the Barkin Ladi General Hospital, Pwajok expressed sadness and disappointment over the resurgence of violence in the area, especially when the local government administration is working tirelessly to promote peace and stability.

Pwajok acknowledged the efforts of vigilantes and security agencies in maintaining law and order, while urging them to be more proactive and vigilant in preventing further attacks.

Pwajok, while praying for God’s comfort and peace for the families and communities affected by the attacks, emphasized that the cycle of violence must be brought to an end.

He called on all relevant stakeholders, including security agencies, community leaders and residents, to join hands in promoting peace and security in Barkin Ladi.

He instructed the healthcare providers to urgently take care of those who survived the attack.
