Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fixed March 28 and 29, 2026, for its National Convention in Abuja, in a key step toward electing new national leadership amid ongoing internal stabilization efforts.
The decision emerged from the party’s 105th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday in Abuja. After deliberating on party affairs, the political landscape, judicial matters, and preparations for internal congresses, NEC issued a communiqué reaffirming prior resolutions and outlining a clear timeline.
In a major endorsement, NEC ratified all decisions from the Emergency 104th NEC meeting on December 7, 2025, stressing their binding nature under the PDP Constitution, Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act, and court rulings. The committee also hailed a recent Federal High Court judgment in Ibadan upholding the party’s leadership structure and directing INEC to recognize the National Caretaker Committee.

NEC reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Abdulrahman Muhammed-led National Caretaker Committee, with Samuel Anyanwu as Secretary, as the sole lawful national organ until the convention. “The National Caretaker Committee remains fully empowered to act as the National Working Committee pending the National Convention,” the communiqué stated.
To pave the way for the convention, NEC approved a nationwide congress schedule with Ward Congresses and Local Government Congresses set for February 2026, followed by State Congresses in March 2026. The National Caretaker Committee must issue guidelines in line with party rules, INEC regulations, and judicial directives.
NEC extended the tenure of the National Caretaker Working Committee, as well as state and zonal caretaker committees, until their respective congresses and the national event. It mandated immediate setup of convention sub-committees for transparent preparations.
National Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Abdulrahman Muhammed, signed the communiqué alongside Anyanwu. In it, NEC urged unity: “All members… shall continue to act strictly in obedience to subsisting court judgments… [and] eschew actions capable of undermining Party cohesion.”
“NEC expressed confidence that [these] resolutions will strengthen internal democracy, restore stability, and reposition the Party for future electoral success,” the document added, calling on members to prioritise party interests.
