A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Ulasi, has warned that the party risks losing credibility ahead of the 2027 elections if it fails to resolve what he described as internal contradictions surrounding the role of Nyesom Wike.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE TV, Ulasi said the PDP, in its current state, cannot effectively challenge Bola Ahmed Tinubu while Wike is seen as a leading figure in the party despite his perceived alignment with the ruling government.
“I don’t see my party as presently constituted challenging Tinubu with Wike as national leader. These are part of the contradictions… if I’m not properly informed and explained to, I will leave the party,” he said.
Ulasi argued that Wike’s position raises serious questions about loyalty and direction within the opposition.
“I told Wike… you cannot be the national leader of PDP and then be supporting President Ahmed Tinubu. That is very unconstructive,” he added.
He questioned what role Wike would play if the PDP produces a presidential candidate for 2027.
“Supposing somebody else emerges as the presidential candidate of PDP, what will he be doing as leader of the party? Will he attend our convention or go to APC rallies?” he asked.

Ulasi warned that his continued stay in the party would depend on how the leadership addresses the issue.
“This might be one of the last meetings I will attend. If I’m not satisfied with the explanations, you will hear from me again,” he said.
He also confirmed that Peter Obi had visited him multiple times this year, noting that their discussions centred on Nigeria’s future and possible political direction.
“If you listen to Peter Obi one-on-one, you will have hope for this country… somebody has a clear idea of what he wants to do,” Ulasi said.
Despite his concerns, Ulasi stressed his long-standing ties to the PDP, recalling his involvement in its formation alongside late former Vice-President Alex Ekueme.
However, he made it clear that if he eventually leaves, he will step away from partisan politics altogether.
“Once I leave the PDP, I will just be a private consultant… I will not join any other party,” he said.
