Paygym: Transforming fitness access in Nigeria

Venturing into something great often begins with a simple idea. For Obum Ezechukwu, a business development specialist with a background in sales, marketing, and strategic partnerships, that idea has grown into Paygym — a tech-driven platform designed to change the way Nigerians and Africans experience fitness.

With years of experience at Zenith Bank Plc and Tide Fintech in the UK, and a degree in Information Technology and Business Information Systems from Middlesex University, London, Ezechukwu has combined his passion for business and technology to tackle one of Africa’s growing lifestyle needs: accessible fitness.

Paygym is a multi-gym subscription platform that eliminates the restrictions of traditional gym memberships. Instead of being tied to one location, users can access multiple gyms nationwide under a single membership. The platform also provides gyms with performance analytics, new revenue streams, and free marketing exposure.

“The vision is simple,” Ezechukwu explains. “Fitness should be a way of life, accessible to everyone. Travelers shouldn’t be restricted. People should have choice and convenience, and gyms should gain visibility and revenue in the process.”

The fitness industry in Nigeria and across Africa is booming, driven by a growing urban youth population and corporate wellness programs. Yet, many gym memberships remain underutilized, leaving both users and gym owners dissatisfied.

Ezechukwu references a World Health Organization study noting that 31% of adults remain physically inactive despite the proven health benefits of regular exercise. Paygym, he believes, is a solution that addresses both accessibility and affordability.

For gym owners, the benefits are straightforward: new revenue, better visibility, and seamless digital management at no cost to them. For users, Paygym offers affordability and convenience, making fitness accessible regardless of location.

The past six months have been both challenging and rewarding for the Paygym founder and his team. From late nights to uncertainties common in startups, the journey has demanded persistence.

“Building Paygym has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life,” Ezechukwu says. “It’s not just a business — it’s a solution, a lifestyle. With the right team and a clear vision, the challenges become worthwhile.”

With the product ready, Paygym has begun onboarding gyms across Nigeria, with plans to scale rapidly before opening subscriptions to users at large. The company is also inviting affiliate marketers to help onboard gyms while earning revenue in the process.

“Any gym can join by registering on our website,” Ezechukwu notes. “Our team takes it from there.”

On funding, Ezechukwu maintains focus on execution over early fundraising. “We’re working with what we have. When the time is right, we’ll open up to investors. For now, our priority is value delivery.”

As Paygym approaches its official rollout, the platform positions itself not just as another fitness app but as a lifestyle enabler. By merging technology, accessibility, and community, it aims to become the go-to fitness solution across Nigeria and, in time, Africa.
