…Unveils financing plan for private car owners
The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (P-CNG) Initiative has rolled out free vehicle conversions for commercial buses in Lagos, while unveiling a financing scheme for private car owners.
During a sensitisation campaign at major commercial bus parks in Lagos, the Programme Director/Chief Executive of the P-CNG Initiative, Michael Oluwagbemi, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to converting 10,000 commercial buses from petrol to CNG within the next 10 weeks.
He said: “This initiative is a game-changer for Nigeria’s transport sector. In just 10 weeks, we aim to register and convert 10,000 commercial buses between Lagos and Abuja,” Oluwagbemi declared. “We began in Abuja, and now, for the past week, we have been in Lagos. Our goal is to complete these conversions by the end of March.”
He emphasised that the scheme is part of President Bola Tinubu’s directive to convert one million vehicles to CNG within three years. “Every great journey begins with a single step. In the past four weeks alone, over 5,000 cars have been registered for conversion. This puts us firmly on track to achieving our target,” he said.
To reinforce this effort, the P-CNG team inaugurated the Portland Gas CNG Mobile Refill Units in Ojota, Lagos, ensuring that converted vehicles can conveniently access refueling stations.
Oluwagbemi highlighted that the initiative prioritizes direct engagement with commercial bus drivers. “We are not asking them to come to our offices. Instead, we are meeting them where they operate, at their parks and terminals. This hands-on approach ensures they understand the benefits of switching to CNG first-hand,” he explained.
The primary objective, he said, is to significantly reduce transportation costs and improve the lives of Nigerians.
While the conversion is free for commercial buses, a financing scheme has been introduced for private car owners to ease their transition.
