From Tony Osauzo, Benin
Former Chief Whip of the Senate, Sir Roland Owie, has commended President Bola Tinubu on his decision to implement the Stephen Oronsaye’s report on public service reforms and the plan to implement the coastal highway from Lagos to Calabar which was approved 42 years ago by the late Alhaji Shehu Shagari’s administration.
Owie, in a statement, in Benin City, said the two decisions were overdue for consideration noting that they would add value to the lives of Nigerians and Nigeria as a country.
“I wish to congratulate President Tinubu on the order to implement the long standing Oronsaye report and for re-visiting the coastal road: Calabar to Lagos.
“That project was put into the 1982 federal government budget by the Bendel, Cross Rivers States National Assembly Caucus then led by the late Sen. Nosike Ikpo, Senators David Dafinone, Umolu, Atake, Hon Dangogo Princewill, Ingo Mac Eteli, Eguaseki Ogida Uwagboe, Dr. Sowho and supported by Hon Junaid Muhammed, Hon Sule Lamidi, Mrs Ebenezer Babatope, Lady Eze of Enugu state just to mention a few of those who supported the project at the National Assembly. I was a member of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation where the initiative for the coastal road was taken.
“May God bless all the National Assembly members who are still alive and grant eternal rest to all those who have gone to join the Lord.
“Eternal rest grant unto HE Shehu Shagari who was a humble and listening president, Dr. K. O. Mbadiwe who was Presidential Adviser on National Assembly then, Senators Uba Ahmed and Chuba Okadigbo who were National Assembly Advisers to President Shagari. They cooperated.
“Above all, may God bless President Bola Tinubu for waking up this all important road network after 42 years to boost the economic life of Southern Nigeria and Nigerians in general,” the statement said.
