Osun: Man poisons boy for stealing maize on his farm

From Lateef Dada, Osogbo

A man identified as Ajibade Gbenga has been arrested by the Osun State Police Command for poisoning a boy, simply identified as Ebenezer, who allegedly stole maize on his farm.

It was gathered that the man, who was said to be a traditional chief in Ipetu-Ijesa, caught the boy on his farm at Ilesa with two pieces of maize.

A video obtained by our correspondent on Thursday revealed how the man was forcing the boy to drink poison whilst holding a cutlass.

He asked the boy to sit down for some minutes after drinking a cup of the poison, which was said to be Sniper.

The man was heard asking the boy why he stole maize, and the boy responded that he was hungry.

He asked the boy where he came from, and the boy said he came from Ireti-Ayo, after which he allowed the boy to go.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident, saying that it had caused the death of the boy’s father.

He explained that the man allegedly caught the suspect on his farm and forced him to drink poison.

“The boy allegedly stole two pieces of corn from the man’s farm. The man caught the suspect, beat him up, and mixed a substance and forced the boy to drink it. The boy drank it, but with the help of good people around, they rushed the boy to a hospital.

“He was rushed to Wesley Guild Hospital. Doctors at the hospital sustained him, and he did not die. The doctors stabilised him. But the news of the incident reached the father of the boy who was caught stealing.

“Some people went to the father and told him that his son had died of poisoning. The father immediately gave up the ghost.

“The boy is alive. But the father died of shock. The matter has been reported, and we have the suspect here with us. Investigation will continue into the matter,” Ojelabi said.
