Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has urged Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to come forward and answer questions from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Speaking at a thanksgiving service for his 63rd birthday celebration at the Redeemed Church in Makurdi, Ortom expressed concern that Bello’s continued hiding could bring disgrace to former governors. He emphasised that those with nothing to hide should not resist inquiries.
“I want to advise my younger brother and friend, Governor Yahaya Bello, not to disgrace former governors,” Ortom said. “There’s no need to hide or resist arrest. Go and respond to the EFCC. They are human beings. If they have questions, the law is there. I have tried to reach him by phone and through his associates, but without success. I want to make this public.”
Ortom thanked the people of Benue for their support during his eight years in office and for celebrating his birthday. He acknowledged that leading the state was a challenging task and called for prayers for all leaders.
“Support my successor and pray for all leaders, as their mistakes can impact us all,” Ortom said. “Constructive criticism is important, as leaders are human and make mistakes.”
Ortom also addressed the youth, urging them to avoid wasting time on social media without purpose. He encouraged them to use social media for personal and state development by learning from others and creating value.
“The internet offers a world of knowledge and opportunities,” Ortom said. “Use it to learn from others and create value for yourselves.”
Ortom expressed gratitude to God for his blessings, stating that he left office a stronger Christian and will continue to worship God. Dignitaries including former Attorney General Mike Aondakaa, PDP Chairman John Ngbede, Senator Abba Moro, former Governor Gabriel Suswam, and the Tor Tiv commended Ortom for his commitment to security and prayed for his continued contributions to the state’s peace and development.
