Organizers of the annual Reis Table Tennis championship has showed gratitude towards the success of the just concluded 2024 edition which ended last weekend.
It was table tennis at its best as the third editon of the tournament came to a close inside the Oba of Lagos Sports Hall, Eko Club, Surulere, Lagos.
Six games were concluded on the final day and they include the Cadet singles boys and girls, Junior singles boys and girls and the Mens and womens singles final.
The championship saw Aminat Fashola and Abdulfatai Abdulbasit emerged cynosure of all eyes as they walked away with the premier prize in the women’s and mens single category.
Fashola floored her rival, Joy Emmanuel 4-1 while Abdulbasit dwarfed Akanbi Railway 3-2 to bagged gold.
Reacting to the success of the championship whose first edition served-off two years ago, top director of the championship, Antonio Oluwagbemiga Reis assured spectators and participants a better outing come next edition. He however showed delightfulness towards the success recored so far.
In his words: ’I’m one of the director of the tournament. I grew up in Nigeria and I have been supporting my dad running this tourney for the past three years and we are having amazing time. I’m very happy and I enjoy watching the game so much. You can see players have been playing for five days to get to this final stage.
The championship is to help this player have a platform to grow their career and we gave them the resources to do that and as you can all see, they were all happy.
‘I want this tournament to be one of the biggest in Africa, we are setting a very big goal and we want to have as many kids as possible. I believe their are many kids in Nigeria hoping for a platform like this. We started with few players in the first edition and I am grateful for where we are now with hundreds of participant.
‘The defending champion now base abroad and that shows we are getting closer to our goal which I believe we will achieve in few years to come. As for the venue, I’m not sure we are going to take it out of Lagos but we can assure all participant a warm welcome wherever the tourney is been stage. We want it to be a national thing not just a Lagos tournament. We have attracted eleven state and I’m sure we’ll get more state as time goes on. Looking at the happy faces of the participates has been my biggest joy and I wish all winners the best,’ he stated.
