From Adanna Nnamani, Abuja
As President Bola Tinubu warms up to implement the Stephen Oronsaye committee report, the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NSCU), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, has urged him to make sure that workers do not lose their jobs.
The appeal was made by the union on Thursday in Abuja during its 58th Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
Asogwa Gupada, President of NSCU, said it was unjust that the government was prioritising agency mergers and closures above reducing its wasteful expenditure and appointments.
Gupada further stated that workers should be paid a living wage that is sustainable and supported the N709,000 minimum wage that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT chapter had recommended.
He said: “Comrade Gentleman and Women, we are further faced with turbulence, selfishness, Administrative Rascality, and self Aggrandisement. This is the time for us to be more united, than ever. The period we are in, is a period where all of us should be encouraged to be more alive and viable outside our primary assignments.”
“Comrades, I don’t want us to come here and be repeating ourselves in the area of insecurity because it appears that our Government does not have any solution in sight. The consequence of this is that Banditary will continue to thrive, farmers and other Economic activities will not progress thus bringing about food shortage, High price in cost of goods, so therefore inflation becomes the other of the day.
“On the MDAs, with challenges, myself and the FAC are aware, and we are handling them head-on. We are not resting until Victory is Assured.
“Distinguished Comrades, the Minimum Wage Committee is on course and we are looking forward to a living wage; that will be more sustainable. We are looking at the N709,000 as proposed by the NLC.
“While the Federal Government is set to implement the Oronsaye Report, which recommended the merging of some MDAs in order to cut the cost of governance. Our
The stand is that the Federal Government should be fair in their implementation of the Report. We do not want to lose our jobs.
“We also suggest the trimming down of political appointees at all levels of Governance, this will as well save the country the huge sum of money used in maintaining these offices.”
