From Lateef Dada, Osogbo
Ghana’s President, John Mahama, has expressed profound gratitude for the support he received from the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, during his political journey, particularly regarding his reelection as President.
Speaking at his installation as Aare Atayeto Oodua in Ile-Ife on Monday, Mahama recounted how the Ooni’s encouragement and faith in him were instrumental during his time in opposition. He shared an anecdote about a visit to the Ooni’s palace, where he was assured of returning to the presidency.
“When I was in opposition, the Ooni invited me to visit his palace in Ile-Ife. He received me warmly and took me to the secret corners of the palace,” Mahama explained. “After that visit, he assured me, ‘Go, you will get your seat back.’ And so it was, as I was reelected in 2024. I do not take this honor lightly,” Mahama said.
He emphasized the historical ties between Ghana and Nigeria, particularly Ile-Ife, noting, “As long as I am president, I will continue to strengthen the bonds between our two nations. We share common ancestry, as many Ghanaians trace their roots back to Ile-Ife.”
He addressed challenges facing the West African region, particularly in the Sahel states, suggesting that instead of ostracizing these nations, efforts should be made to build bridges with them and encourage their inclusion in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Mahama also commended President Bola Tinubu for his ongoing friendship and support, even during Mahama’s time in opposition, describing Tinubu as a source of inspiration.
In his remarks, the Ooni of Ife hailed Mahama as a symbol of African unity and cultural continuity. He reflected on Mahama’s longstanding connection to Ile-Ife, stating, “This palace is not new to you. You have been part of our journey.”
He recalled a previous visit by Mahama after leaving office, during which prayers were offered to the ancestors with a prophetic declaration that Mahama would return to leadership. The Ooni noted that this prophecy has now come to fruition with Mahama’s return to office.
