The Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has announced plans to confer honorary doctoral degrees on eminent personalities in the country, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi; the Sultan of Sokoto caliphate, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III; the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Walter Samuel Onnoghen; and the Oloye of Oye-Ekiti, Oba Oluwole Ademolaju, at its 10th convocation ceremonies.
The outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, made the disclosure at a press conference held at the Oye campus of the institution, heralding activities marking the week-long ceremonies beginning from February 1 to 7, 2026.
The VC also revealed that the university will graduate a total of 7,684 students at the 2026 convocation ceremonies, including 7,396 undergraduates and 288 postgraduate students, with 131 first-class graduates across faculties of the institution.
Fasina, who assumed office on February 11, 2021, will be completing his five-year tenure next week. While listing some of his administration’s achievements, he said the university recorded a remarkable 310 per cent increase in its internally generated revenue (IGR).
He also hinted that FUOYE is currently ranked the fourth most-subscribed university out of the 303 universities in the country, adding that the continuous increase in the enrolment of students shifted the population from 20,000 to over 60,000 students.
He said the university increased its number of faculties from eight to eighteen, with 91 academic programmes now fully accredited, noting that courses such as Statistics, Pharmacy and Radiography, with provisional accreditation, would soon be granted full accreditation.
Fasina pointed out that his administration constructed and completed over 160 infrastructure projects across campuses of the university, which he described as the “Blue Roof Legacy”, including a new Senate Building, the Ndoma-Egba 1,000-seater auditorium, academic buildings, hostels, modern science laboratory complexes, the Faculty of Law building and a Computer-Based Test Centre, among others.

According to him, the projects were designed to support enrollment growth and improve teaching and research capacities across its campuses.
He said the university established some new colleges, including Medicine, Computing, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering and Data Science, making FUOYE contribute to workforce development and also address critical needs of the economy.
Fasina also said that FUOYE made remarkable achievements in sports, ranking number one in Ekiti, number two in Nigeria and third in Africa, among other numerous achievements of his administration.
Fasina, while appealing to members of the university to show love and support to the incoming Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, to make the university attain more glorious heights, noted that the grace and mercy of God sustained him throughout his five years in office, urging people to stop indulging in acts that can pull down others.
“I ran this university with the fear of God, and that was what actually helped me. And that was why mercy showed up on me. When the days were tough, it was mercy and the grace of God that helped me.
“No man can do anything without the support of God. I have always said it can only be God. What God cannot do does not exist. If you think you are clever and you want to pull somebody down, you are deceiving yourself. God has ordained for everybody his own time. Face your own portion and make sure you make the best of it. Don’t go and be fighting for another man’s portion, because at the end of the day you will have yourself to blame.”
According to the VC, the convocation ceremonies will culminate on Saturday with a convocation lecture to be delivered by Rev. Fr Matthew Hassan Kukah, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, at the Victor Ndoma-Egba auditorium of the university.
