Worried by the high rate of child trafficking in the state, Ondo State Government yesterday declared that it would soon commence proper implementation of the laws against child trafficking in all the 18 local government areas of the state.
The wife of the governor, Mrs Betty Akeredolu, while speaking at a sensitization programme organized by a Non Governmental Organization (NGO), F3AID in Akure, said the present administration frowns at the level of child trafficking in the state and would do everything
possible to curb the menace.
She said the existing laws against child trafficking which have not been properly implemented will be implemented, and therefore charged those involved in the illicit business to desist or face the wrath of the law. According to her, child trafficking is an infringement on the rights of the children as stipulated in the child rights acts, which she said is operational in the state and some other states of the federation.
She also called on the people of the state to join hands with the government in
fighting against child trafficking by reporting individuals involved in the illegal business to law enforcement agencies.
Mrs. Akeredolu, who stressed the need for parents to take good care of their children and wards, also reiterated the state government’s determination to support women and children by providing opportunities for them to thrive.
