If you are someone who thinks that Omar Sy just broke onto the scene because you are somehow seeing him in Netflix’s Lupin for the first time, you are wrong.
This is not his first rodeo. The 43-year-old French actor — born to Senegalese and Mauritanian parents — began his career fresh out of secondary school as a comedian. He developed his comedic and acting chops by starring in the French sketch show titled, Service après-vente des émissions, from 2005 to 2012.
Even though he’d already established himself in France, his big break came with the 2011 comedy-drama film, The Intouchables, in which he plays a resourceful young man who becomes the caregiver to a wealthy quadriplegic. The movie became the biggest movie of all time in French cinemas, garnered Sy numerous awards, and got him enough international recognition to successfully open the doors to Hollywood.
What followed these achievements was a slew of roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2016), Jurassic World (2015), and Transformers: The Last 
Knight (2017). After a decade of mostly starring in Hollywood projects, Lupin signifies a homecoming for Sy.
Filmed mostly in Paris, Lupin follows the adventures of Assane Diop (Sy). A professional thief skilled in the art of disguise, who uses Arsene Lupin — the fictional gentleman burglar created by French writer Maurice LeBlanc in 1905 — as his inspiration to get revenge on Hubert Pelligrini, the man who framed Assane’s father for theft two decades before the beginning of the series.
Part 1 of Lupin’s first season was released in January 2021 and has been a hit, Netflix reporting that over 70 million individual accounts viewed the series within the first month alone. When asked, in an interview with Deadline, about what he finds most satisfying about the show’s success, Sy said, “It’s the globality of the response. In cinema, when we tell stories, the idea is to touch everyone at the same spot. And when I see the experience of things that I’ve done that speak to the world, it always meets in the same place; everyone is touched or amazed by the same things. It’s great to see in Brazil or in France they loved Lupin for the same reason. There’s something universal and that’s something I always try to achieve.”
With part two of Lupin coming to Netflix on the 11th of June 2021 and the other high-profile projects he has lined up, Omar Sy isn’t going anywhere soon. And with that much charisma and talent, we’re totally fine with that.
