Public affairs analyst Kunle Oladeinde has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his handling of the kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, accusing the governor of failing to provide the leadership expected of the state’s chief security officer.
Speaking during a television interview, Oladeinde expressed surprise at Makinde’s recent call for the United Nations and other international bodies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and rescue of the victims.
According to him, seeking international intervention was unnecessary and suggested the governor had failed in his responsibilities.
“I’m so surprised that the governor of Oyo State can make such a statement. Calling for international intervention, on what? It shows he has failed,” Oladeinde said.
He argued that although state governors do not have constitutional control over security agencies, they are expected to coordinate security efforts and engage relevant authorities during crises.
Oladeinde claimed Makinde should have immediately informed President Bola Tinubu after the incident rather than waiting for the President to reach out to the state government.

“When something like this happens, the governor should contact the President, not the other way round,” he said.
The analyst also alleged that Makinde did not respond swiftly in the early stages of the kidnapping, claiming the governor failed to convene meetings with local security stakeholders, including hunters and Amotekun operatives, to coordinate rescue efforts.
He further accused the governor of politicising the incident instead of focusing on resolving the security challenge.
Oladeinde questioned the rationale behind demanding an international investigation despite the sacrifices made by security personnel during the rescue operation, noting that an Army lieutenant lost his life in the mission.
He maintained that the governor’s handling of the incident reflected poor leadership and called on Makinde to resign if he could not effectively manage security challenges in the state.
“He’s also a presidential aspirant. If he cannot handle security in his own state, then he should resign,” Oladeinde said.
The remarks come amid continued public debate over the kidnapping, the rescue operation and Governor Makinde’s call for an independent international investigation into the incident.
