Okonjo-Iweala debunks viral comment on Nigeria’s debt

By John Ogunsemore

The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has refuted a viral comment credited to her on Nigeria’s rising debt.

A viral comment circulating on social media, especially Facebook, claimed Okonjo-Iweala berated the Bola Tinubu administration for allegedly accumulating N24 trillion in debts in two months despite subsidy removal.

In a Monday post on her verified X handle, the former finance minister warned those circulating such false comments to desist.

Sharing a screenshot of the fake comment, Okonjo-Iweala said, “It appears that there are people in Nigeria trying to use my name and image on social media to fight battles on different sides of the political divide, putting words in my mouth that I never said.

“Therefore, I want to alert everyone that the message below is FAKE.

“This is a stern warning to all those trying to misuse my name for their political ends that I will continue to rebut any attempts to use my name and image falsely!”
