Occupy NASS: PDP, ADC, other opposition parties must join protest – Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi said the opposition must come together to resist what he described as an attempt to foist a one-party state by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Amaechi made the call on Tuesday while addressing reporters at the venue of the ongoing ‘Occupy National Assembly’ protest in Abuja.

The demonstrators are asking for a reversal of the Senate’s rejection of mandatory electronic transmission of results during elections in the amended Electoral Act.

Amaechi accused the ruling APC of opposing the electronic transmission of election results out of fear of losing elections.

He said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other parties must unite to compel the authorities to do the right thing.

“I believe that the opposition parties should come out—PDP, ADC, everybody should be out—to protest against the attempt of one party.

“If we come out and they say the opposition has hijacked the protest, what is the APC doing? Are they not hijacking? What are they afraid of? I thought they said they have 31 governors. Tinubu is not Jonathan. The only way a good politician will know he has done well is by the people,” the former Rivers governor said.

He added that the opposition and civil society would not relent even if President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio ignored them.

Amaechi further accused the incumbent administration of inflicting hardship on Nigerians through its policies, including fuel subsidy removal.

Comparing the Tinubu administration to its predecessor, Amaechi said, “It is worse now than it was then. In Buhari’s time, at least, even though we were planning to remove the subsidy, we had better plans for citizens.”
