Delta State Governor,  Sheriff Oborevwori, officially flagged off the Otovwodo flyover in Ughelli North this week, describing the project as a lasting solution to chronic traffic congestion at one of the state’s busiest junctions.

“This flyover is a permanent answer to the bottleneck at Otovwodo Junction. Rapid population growth has overstretched Ughelli’s road network, costing commuters several productive hours daily, I have experienced this gridlock personally,” he said.

Oborevwori noted that the project aligns with his administration’s infrastructure renewal agenda, emphasizing durable road construction, prudent resource management, and improved connectivity across urban and rural communities. As an interim measure, his government had previously constructed alternative routes, including Uduere, Okogbe, Oru, and Edo streets, along with Royal Avenue linking Agbarha-Otor Road, to ease traffic ahead of the flyover’s construction.

The Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Dr. Peer Lubasch, expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in the company.

“We sincerely thank you for entrusting this significant contract to Julius Berger. We see this not just as a contract, but as a validation of our technical expertise and a testament to our strong partnership with Delta State,” Lubasch said. He commended the governor’s vision under the M.O.R.E. Agenda of Delta State – the BIG HEART, noting that Julius Berger is privileged to contribute to the state’s progress.

Lubasch added that the company, having delivered landmark roads and flyovers in Warri, is eager to continue the transformation in Ughelli.

“The project features a 15-span flyover designed as a two-lane dual carriageway, with connecting roads, roundabouts, drainage systems, and modern solar street lighting. We deliver our projects to the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency,” he said.

He also appealed for the full cooperation of the host community, stressing that their support is vital to ensuring the project serves generations to come.

Valued at N39.3 billion, the Otovwodo Flyover is expected to be completed within 12 months. It is designed to improve connectivity across urban and rural areas, reduce travel time, enhance safety, and stimulate economic activity in the region.

The flag-off event was a grand affair resembling a carnival, attended by royal fathers, community leaders, state executive council members, lawmakers from the Delta State Assembly, the Senate, and the Federal House of Representatives. Leading Team Julius Berger to the ceremony were Lubasch, Regional Manager Engr. Friedrich Wieser, and Project Manager Engr. Thomas Haug, among others, witnessing the historic start of the transformative project.

This flyover represents a milestone in Delta State’s infrastructure agenda, signaling a commitment to modern, sustainable urban development and improved quality of life for residents of Ughelli and its environs.
