From Sola Ojo, Abuja
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, at the weekend, outlined five pillars for Nigeria’s economic renewal.
Delivering a keynote reflection at the Paul Alaje 2nd Colloquium held in Abuja via Zoom from Madrid, Spain, he addressed the theme “Breaking the Cycle: How Nigeria Can Lead Africa from Poverty to Prosperity.”
To him, the colloquium provided an avenue for meaningful dialogue and ideas required to drive national transformation.
Obi noted that although Africa is widely regarded as a continent full of potential, its development outcomes remain below expectations.
He added that Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy, occupies a central position in shaping the continent’s future.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s significant human and natural resources, he said the country continues to contend with poor human development indicators.

Obi, however, expressed optimism that Nigeria can still chart a new course through deliberate choices and accountable leadership.
Obi’s proposed five key pillars for transitioning Nigeria from managing poverty to building shared prosperity are a shift from consumption to production, prioritising human capital development, and strengthening governance and public institutions.
Others are building a 21st-century economy driven by innovation and technology and fostering national unity and a shared purpose.
He maintained that other nations had overcome even more severe challenges by adopting disciplined strategies and visionary leadership, adding that Nigeria could do the same by investing in its people, strengthening institutions, and building an inclusive nation.
He added that Nigeria must move away from patronage-driven systems and embrace policies that promote productivity and accountability if it hopes to reverse its development trajectory.
