Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the recent deadly attacks in Kwara State, describing the killings as tragic, heartbreaking and a clear failure of governance.
Reacting on Thursday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi said he was deeply saddened by reports that over 100 residents were brutally killed in coordinated attacks on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.
The former Anambra State governor extended his condolences to the bereaved families, as well as the government and people of Kwara, noting that no nation should become numb to the loss of innocent lives.
“Every loss of innocent life is tragic, and these killings represent a major failure for us as a nation,” Obi said.
‘Nigeria must declare war on insecurity’
Obi warned that the persistent wave of violence across Nigeria has reached alarming levels, stressing that the country is now witnessing bloodshed comparable to, or even worse than, what is seen in some war-torn nations.
According to him, the continued attacks on helpless communities underscore the urgent need for decisive and coordinated action against insecurity.
“These recurring acts of violence across our country now worse than what occurs in some countries at war show clearly that Nigeria must declare war on insecurity of lives and property and deploy every possible means to end this menace,” he stated.

He urged security agencies and relevant authorities to move swiftly, restore peace in affected areas, apprehend those behind the attacks, and reassure Nigerians that their lives truly matter.
Details of the Kwara attack
The condemnation followed a deadly overnight assault on Woro and Nuku villages, where gunmen stormed the communities, killing scores of residents and setting houses ablaze.
While initial reports put the death toll at dozens, later accounts suggested that over 100 people may have been killed, triggering widespread outrage and renewed criticism of the Federal Government’s handling of insecurity.
The massacre is regarded as one of the deadliest attacks in Kwara State in recent years, reigniting fears over the growing spread of violent attacks across parts of the North-Central region.
Calls for stronger security response
The incident has continued to draw condemnation from political leaders, civil society organisations, and community stakeholders, many of whom are calling for stronger military operations, improved intelligence gathering, and a permanent security presence in vulnerable areas.
Following the attack, security operatives were deployed to the affected communities to prevent further violence, while government officials pledged to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
However, for many residents and observers, the tragedy once again highlights the urgent need for long-term solutions to Nigeria’s deepening insecurity crisis.
