Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has hailed the management and workforce of Coleman Technical Industries Limited, makers of Coleman Wires and Cables, for upholding what he described as “a rare culture of succession, service and sustainability” that has kept the company thriving for 50 years.

Speaking at the company’s Golden Jubilee Dinner and Awards Night held in Ogun State on Thursday, Obasanjo commended the visionary leadership of the company’s founder, Asiwaju (Dr.) Solomon Onafowokan, and the dedication of Coleman’s employees who have driven its growth from a small trading outfit to a continental manufacturing powerhouse.

“When you go to the cemetery, you don’t see it written that a man tried and died,” Obasanjo said to thunderous applause. “You only see that men lived and died — but you, Asiwaju, have done something different. You have ensured your business continues to thrive even while you are alive and not directly in charge. That is wisdom, foresight and good leadership.”

The former President described Coleman as a beacon of hope for Nigerian entrepreneurs, adding that the company’s longevity was proof that “Nigerians can build legacies that outlive their founders.”

He urged other business owners to emulate the Onafowokan family’s approach to leadership continuity.

“Succession is not just about family; it’s about values,” Obasanjo noted. “The workers who keep showing up every day, who have stayed through the decades, are the real proof that this company has built a culture of loyalty and excellence.”

In his emotional address, Asiwaju Solomon Onafowokan, founder and chairman of Coleman, reflected on the company’s 50-year journey, describing it as a “story of faith, people and providence.”

He credited the company’s employees for their dedication, which he said has sustained the brand through economic cycles and industry challenges.

“It’s not by my might but by the grace of Almighty God,” the chairman said. “I was deliberate about succession because when you have a mission, you must ensure those who take over have the same drive to succeed. I am proud of my sons and proud of the men and women who built this company with me.”

Managing director/CEO, Mr. George Onafowokan, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to innovation and workforce empowerment, highlighting Coleman’s transformation into a global player.

“Coleman today is on track to becoming a ₦15 trillion enterprise, with over 50% of our revenue projected from exports,” George said. “Behind that number are thousands of workers, engineers, and partners who believe in Nigeria’s potential to manufacture and compete globally.”

The celebration also doubled as a night of recognition for staff and distributors who have contributed to the company’s legacy.

Former President Obasanjo personally presented the Excellence Award to Mr. Femi Adeleye, one of Coleman’s leading distributors.

Ogun State Deputy Governor also presented the Long Service Award to Mrs. Adefemi Grace, who has worked with Coleman for 38 years, while Mr. Ikini Enahoro received recognition for 21 years of dedicated service.

In a moment that drew a standing ovation, Obasanjo joined the management in presenting a Rolls-Royce gift to the company’s founder, Dr. Onafowokan, in appreciation of his vision and leadership.

The golden jubilee dinner was attended by a distinguished lineup of guests, including the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Pastor Tunde Bakare, the Akarigbo of Remo, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, and music legend King Sunny Ade, who thrilled guests with an electrifying live performance.

Throughout the evening, tributes poured in for the Coleman workforce, described by guests as “the heartbeat of the brand.” Several employees shared emotional recollections of their journey with the company, from its modest beginnings to its current status as a leader in fibre optic and cable technology across Africa.

The event’s high point came when the management unveiled the company’s next 10-year vision; to deepen employee welfare, expand training opportunities, and build Africa’s largest sustainable manufacturing hub.

As the night drew to a close, Obasanjo’s words lingered in the air: “Coleman’s success is not just in its cables; it is in its people, the hands that built, the minds that innovate, and the hearts that believe in continuity. That is the true legacy of leadership.”

The 50th anniversary celebration, marked with glamour and gratitude, thus became more than a corporate milestone: It was a tribute to workers, family, and foresight that continue to define Coleman’s enduring story of excellence.
