The Nigeria Youth Organisation (NYO) has condemned what it described as an online smear campaign against the Minister of Works, David Umahi, and called on security agencies to investigate those behind the trending publications.
In a statement issued on February 27, 2026, and signed by its National Executive President, Okorie C. Okorie, and National Secretary, Oluwabukunmi E. Awolola, the youth body expressed concern over videos and commentaries circulating on social media allegedly aimed at discrediting the minister.
The organisation specifically referenced a trending video by a female commentator, Tracy Nicholas Ohiri, which it said contained allegations and remarks against the minister and the prosecutorial authorities involved in an ongoing legal matter.
NYO claimed that a review of the content revealed inconsistencies in the allegations, including conflicting figures and timelines.
While affirming Nigerians’ constitutional right to freedom of expression, the group cautioned against what it described as reckless and unverified online attacks on public officials.
“We strongly condemn the growing trend of unsubstantiated and potentially coordinated online attacks targeted at public officials who are actively engaged in national development efforts,” the statement said.

The youth organisation also questioned the timing and pattern of the online publications, suggesting they could be part of a coordinated effort to undermine ongoing infrastructure reforms in the country.
It urged Nigerians to rely on due process and the judicial system in resolving disputes rather than social media campaigns.
“If there are valid grievances, the appropriate forum remains a court of competent jurisdiction and not the court of social media opinion,” the group stated.
NYO further called on relevant security and regulatory agencies to investigate the origin and possible sponsorship of the publications to determine whether they form part of a deliberate misinformation campaign.
The organisation also commended Umahi’s performance in office, citing ongoing road infrastructure projects across the country as evidence of his impact.
As part of its recognition of his contributions, the group announced its decision to confer on the minister the Distinguished National Youth Merit Award of Excellence as Best Minister of the Year 2025.
The youth body reaffirmed its support for accountability, due process and responsible civic engagement, while warning against attempts to pressure public officials outside legal channels.
