The death has been announced of Godfrey Oraegbunam Nwachukwu of Okoye Mmachiaku family of Oranto village, Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Obsequies announced by the family revealed Nwachukwu would be buried in his country home in Oranto village, Ukpo after a Requiem mass to be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Oranto, on Friday, April 19, 2024.
Earlier on, a Requiem mass was celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Independence Layout, Enugu, yesterday. The Requiem mass was preceded by a vigil mass, followed by a service of songs and night of tributes on Tuesday, April 16, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Independence Layout Enugu.
These events were attended by members of the deceased’s family, friends, associates, well wishers and in-laws, including a former governor of Anambra State and two-time minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.
Nwachukwu was a public servant, retiring in 1984 from the director cadre in the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment before veering into legal practice. He was a practising lawyer in Enugu and member of the Royal Cabinet of Eze Ukpo, known as the ‘Owelle’.
He had a distinguished career in the public service and was married to Benedeth Nwachukwu (Nee Ngige) of the Ngige dynasty in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area, also of Anambra State.
He is survived by many children, including Chidi Nwachukwu, Chijioke Nwachukwu, Ikenna Nwachukwu, Emeka Nwachukwu and Bernard Nwachukwu, a practicing Orthopedic surgeon with Wyckoff Heights Hospital in New York, United States of America.
