The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has responded to a report published in The Guardian Newspaper on Friday, August 29, 2025, titled: “Surge in unruly fan conduct, matchday violence plunge NPFL in crisis.”
In an official statement, the NPFL emphasized that the 2025/26 season, which commenced just a week ago, has been progressing peacefully, with matches conducted in a largely orderly and secure environment. The league authorities reported no officially recorded incidents of fan violence or disorder at any of the opening fixtures.
“The attention of the NPFL has been drawn to the report suggesting a rise in fan misconduct. We wish to clarify that this portrayal does not reflect the true situation on the ground,” said Danladi Ibrahim, Esq., Secretary and Legal Adviser to the NPFL Board.
The NPFL reiterated its commitment to professionalism, fair play, and an enhanced fan experience. It highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen its Monitoring and Compliance Unit and the implementation of proactive safety measures aligned with global best practices.
“We remain committed to ensuring a safe, secure, and enjoyable match-day environment for players, officials, and fans alike,” the statement continued.
The league acknowledged the media as vital partners in promoting Nigerian football and encouraged continued collaboration to ensure accurate and responsible reporting that supports the league’s growth.
“We remain open to constructive engagement with the media and welcome feedback that helps strengthen the development of our league,” the statement concluded.
The NPFL Board reassured all stakeholders—including fans, clubs, sponsors, and the wider sporting community—that the 2025/26 season is firmly on course, driven by a renewed focus on excellence and integrity.
