The Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) has condemned the terrorist attack on Kasuwan Daji Market in the Demo community of Borgu Local Government , Niger State, describing the incident as a brutal assault on innocent citizens and a direct threat to peace and economic stability in the region.
Reports indicate that at least 30 traders, including women and other civilians, were killed during the attack, while several others were abducted and the market razed by suspected terrorists.
In a statement on Sunday, Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, expressed shock and outrage over the incident, noting that it has plunged families into mourning, disrupted livelihoods, and destabilised otherwise peaceful communities.
Governor Yahaya described the targeting of market women, traders, and citizens engaged in lawful activities as morally indefensible, stressing that such acts strike at the core of communal harmony and regional economic life.
He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to track down and apprehend the perpetrators, ensuring they are brought to justice, while also prioritising the rescue of those abducted.
Meanwhile, the Forum also expressed grief over a tragic boat mishap in Yobe State, where at least 25 passengers lost their lives and 14 others remain missing after a passenger boat capsized along the Yobe River in Garbi town, Nguru Local Government Area, while returning from local commercial activities.
Speaking on behalf of the Forum, Yahaya described the incident as a painful reminder of the urgent need to prioritise safety in all forms of transportation. He urged relevant authorities to intensify search and rescue operations, ensure survivors receive immediate medical care, and enforce safety regulations to prevent future occurrences.
The NSGF appealed to citizens across Northern Nigeria to remain calm, united, and supportive of one another during this difficult period, while reiterating its resolve to work closely with relevant agencies to tackle insecurity, strengthen emergency response mechanisms, and support communities affected by tragic incidents.
